Morgaine's brother lay dieing with her son's sword in his chest at Camlann. He cried for the mother to come take him home... Only she had been dead for many years and could not answer. Instead a tiny woman came to him in a dress of black with a silver sash. She was old, so very old. She brought Arthur onto her boat and took him to her home, to her well, where he remains.

As Arthur lost his consciousness, slumbering into eternal sleep, he had a question... When this old woman who responds to the name mother dies, who will tend the well? Don't we all have an obligation to nurture that which nurtured us?

The Swan Maiden

Caer, wandered into the dreams of the irish god of love, Angus Og, one night as he slept in his parent's home. He awoke shouting for his mother Boann, and his father, the Daghda, he yelled "I have seen, the loveliest figure in Ireland!" His parents were shocked. He had come home so sad and disheartened after his year and a day quest searching for true love.

He had fallen asleep from his exhausting fruitless search. At first they were pleased to see their son reviving... Then they watched him begin to waste away for he had only seen the beautiful figure in a dream and never touched her. For all he knew, a dream was all she would ever be. He refused to eat and grew so sad far worse than before. His family worried bitterly for his health.

Finally, one of Angus's brothers has had enough. He packs them up and they go on a search that lasts many years. They are going to find the love of Angus or die trying. Their search ends at the home of Bruigh Mac, who claims Caer to be his enchanted daughter turned into a swan.

So Angus goes to the pond where she lives every day for many years and he pleads for her love. He has finally found the one he has nearly yearned himself to death for. She responds she loves her freedom she loves him as well but how can he ask her to take human form and tie herself to land? So he changes himself into a swan and together they are free.
